Tabs, duplication & panes

Right-click an SSH tab. Duplicate Session and Duplicate SSH Channel are at the top of the menu.

Open another remote terminal

Duplicate SessionDuplicate SSH Channel
TransportA new independent TCP / SSH connectionThe existing SSH connection
AuthenticationRuns again; a valid saved password can be reusedReuses existing authentication
ShellA new remote shellA new remote shell
Best forIndependent connectionsAnother shell on an authenticated connection
RequirementOriginal tab may be disconnectedOriginal tab must be connected
Failure scopeConnections are independentClosing one channel leaves others alive; transport failure affects all shared channels
Both actions start a new shell. The difference is whether they share the underlying connection.
Duplicate Session creates another SSH transport, while Duplicate SSH Channel creates another shell inside the existing transport

Neither action clones running programs, editor state or the current directory. A new tab does not join the original tab's vim session.

Split two tabs

  1. Open both terminals, including a local/SSH pair if needed.
  2. Right-click one tab and open Split panes.
  3. Select the other tab, then the side-by-side or stacked layout.
  4. Click the pane you want to type into. Cancel the split to return to one pane.

The layout supports two equal panes, without arbitrary nesting. Closing one tab leaves the other session running.

Names, status and colors

  • Rename changes the tab alias without renaming the saved profile. Clear the alias to restore the profile name.
  • Show Numbers, Show Terminal Title and Show Status Icon control the label.
  • Set Tab Color stores a tab color. Aliases, colors and display preferences persist.
  • Arrange Tabs moves tabs or sorts them by name.

Remote programs may set the terminal title. Hover over a tab or open its menu to verify the connection identity.

Groups and separate windows

Tab groups organize open SSH and local tabs. They are separate from the saved-server Groups in the sidebar.

Tab to Window keeps the live connection, output and process. Return it to the main window when needed. Closing the child window closes that session. Detached-window placement is not restored after restart.

Close several tabs

Close actions cover the current tab, tabs to the right, other tabs, all local tabs and all tabs. Right/other operates on currently visible tabs; all/all local includes groups and windows. Closing a tab retains its saved profile but ends that terminal instance.
